YMBox

The local hub of the Yachtmemory system.

The YMBox connects existing onboard technology, sensors and modules into one integrated system – locally on board and independent of any cloud service.

The YMBox currently installed on Silent-Sea is an active development prototype. The final hardware design will be significantly more compact.
YMBox

Hardware and software in one unit.

The YMBox collects data from existing devices and bus systems such as CAN, NMEA2000, NMEA0183 and Signal K.

It stores the data locally in a database, provides dashboards and connects sensors, analysis and automation into one integrated system.

The architecture remains fully operational locally – even without an internet connection.

YM Architecture

System architecture

The YMBox connects sensors, onboard electronics, local dashboards and optional cloud services.

YMBox Architecture
YMBox

Technical foundation

The YMBox is built on proven components and open interfaces.

Raspberry Pi 5

Compact Linux platform for local data processing, dashboard and onboard services.

CAN / NMEA

Connection to existing onboard electronics via CAN, NMEA2000, NMEA0183 and Signal K.

MariaDB

Local database for long-term data, histories, anchorages and system states.

WireGuard VPN

Secure connection to the YMServer without making the yacht directly reachable from the internet.

Local web dashboard

Display within the onboard network on tablet, notebook or smartphone.

Open Source

The onboard platform is based on open standards and documented hardware.

Local dashboard

All data can be displayed directly within the onboard network on a tablet, notebook or smartphone.

The dashboard runs locally on the yacht and does not require any external cloud connection.

Sensors and extensions

The YMBox connects additional Yachtmemory modules such as the chain force sensor, chain length sensor, bilge sensor or YM Switch Box.

This enables functions that conventional onboard electronics usually do not provide.

Onboard network, Wi-Fi and internet

The YMBox provides local dashboards and services directly within the onboard network.

Internet access is only required for remote access, synchronization or cloud functions.

Secure cloud connection

When cloud functions are used, the YMBox connects to the YMServer exclusively through an encrypted VPN.

This means the yacht is never directly accessible from the internet.

Open source and open standards

The YMBox is based on open standards, documented hardware and open-source software.

Existing systems are integrated instead of being replaced.
